From time to time, Interior Designers focus on an element in their overall design that requires a clever, custom solution. In this series, BLOG//ARIDO will feature Specialty Elements that ARIDO members have created to meet a very specific project need.

Housed in a 100-year-old former garment factory, the building anchors one of the busiest intersections of downtown Toronto's entertainment district. The design team’s goal was to create a seamless environment that would inspire people to travel. They were influenced by 19th-century explorers' clubs and movies about fantasy travel, including the Wes Anderson classic, ‘The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’.

Upon entering, guests are visually struck by the boardroom: an angled, obsidian box that knits the retail, event space, and workplace together. This sleek and striking element hovers above the retail space, seeming to balance within the 19th-century brick and beam building. The walls of windows on either end allow complete transparency while framing street and event space views.

The boardroom can host internal meetings or training sessions and can accommodate visiting executives from out of town. Additionally, it can be used as the VIP section of the event space, making it a multifunctional feature of the Travel Centre that can also generate revenue.

By invigorating this historic space with contemporary viability and visual flair, the boardroom element creates a bold visual identity for the Travel Centre brand, reflecting the adventurous spirit of its motto, "To open up the world for those who want to see."
